Will any team give longtime Panthers QB Cam Newton a shot to start? Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Cam Newton may have to accept backup role to remain in NFL

With the Carolina Panthers committing to Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton is likely out of a starting quarterback gig for the 2020 season.

The 30-year-old former MVP's destinations are dwindling with the Los Angeles Chargers reportedly committing to Tyrod Taylor, the New England Patriots possibly rolling with second-year QB Jarrett Stidham and potential rookie franchise signal-callers coming out of the upcoming NFL Draft.

Although the Cincinnati Bengals are expected to move on from Andy Dalton, they're expected to select LSU's Joe Burrow with the first pick in the draft. Oregon's Justin Herbert, Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Utah State's Jordan Love are also expected to be picked in the first round of the draft.

AFC EAST:

  • Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen.
  • Miami Dolphins: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh Rosen. Potential to draft Tua Tagovailoa.
  • New England Patriots: Jarrett Stidham. Potential to draft Jordan Love.
  • New York Jets: Sam Darnold.

AFC NORTH:

  • Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger.
  • Cleveland Browns: Baker Mayfield.
  • Cincinnati Bengals: Andy Dalton. Potential to draft Joe Burrow.

AFC SOUTH:

  • Houston Texans: Deshaun Watson.
  • Tennessee Titans: Ryan Tannehill.
  • Indianapolis Colts: Philip Rivers, Jacoby Brissett.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars: Gardner Minshew.

AFC WEST:

  • Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes.
  • Denver Broncos: Drew Lock.
  • Las Vegas Raiders: Marcus Mariota, Derek Carr.
  • Los Angeles Chargers: Tyrod Taylor. Potential to draft Justin Herbert.

NFC EAST:

  • Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz.
  • Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott.
  • New York Giants: Daniel Jones.
  • Washington Redskins: Dwayne Haskins.

NFC NORTH:

  • Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers.
  • Minnesota Vikings: Kirk Cousins.
  • Chicago Bears: Nick Foles, Mitchell Trubisky.
  • Detroit Lions: Matt Stafford.

NFC SOUTH:

  • New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees, Taysom Hill.
  • Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Tom Brady.
  • Carolina Panthers: Teddy Bridgewater.

NFC WEST:

  • Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray.
  • Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff.
  • San Francisco 49ers: Jimmy Garoppolo.
  • Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson.

As seen from the QB list above, it's going to be extremely hard for Newton to find a role as a starting quarterback. The only potential to become a starter with any team in the NFL is if he signs with the Patriots, which at this point is highly unlikely given they reportedly won't spend big on a QB after losing Tom Brady to the Buccaneers.

In addition, Newton is coming off an injury-ravaged season, missing nearly the entire 2019 campaign, and has taken a ton of hits since being selected No. 1 overall in 2011.
